Reed is an interesting perennial plant that can quite reach four meters in height. Such an aquatic herbaceous plant with a thick flexible stem also has a creeping rhizome with hollow shoots. Reed propagates by rhizomes that can quickly penetrate any moist soil. The next long leaves have a rather flat lanceolate shape. The leathery plates are sharp at the edges and have a bluish-green tint, they are always turned with their edge to the wind.

Reed usually blooms from about July to September. Its inflorescences are represented by a multi-haired fluffy panicle, the length of which can reach 30 cm. Such a sprawling panicle has a purple hue. Reed grows everywhere near rivers, ponds, wetlands and other bodies of water.

The leaves of this plant contain an incredible amount of ascorbic acid and vitamin A. Such a diaphoretic and diuretic has been used since ancient times in the form of unique infusions. Along with this, cane has both antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Reed use

To prepare a healing infusion of cane, you need to brew 20 grams of chopped herbs with one full glass of boiling water, insist in a tightly closed thermos for about four hours, and then gently strain. For diseases of the bladder and kidneys, as well as for colds and edema, it is advised to take 50 ml of the drug 4 times a day. Moreover, such a unique infusion is also indicated for beriberi and general weakness.

Special powder from dried leaves is designed for the speedy healing of extensive and festering wounds. Often, various decoctions and infusions of cane are recommended for poisoning the body with toxic substances and low-quality products.

Cane juice

Fresh cane juice can be drunk to quench thirst and hemoptysis, as well as to relieve feverish conditions. Based on this juice, effective compresses can be made to get rid of itching after insect bites and neutralize their poison.

Types of reeds

Sugarcane
Sugarcane

This genus of plants includes about 5 species. Many species grow almost everywhere.

Spear-shaped reed. This type of plant is very common in Europe. This aquatic perennial prefers shallow water. It has a thick rhizome that is rich in starch. A simple stem without nodes is complemented by two-row leaves collected at the base. Oblong-linear plates with a solid edge are rather small. Single-sex flowers are located in dense brown spike-shaped inflorescences.

Marsh reed. The presented erect plant has a rounded smooth stem. Its height can reach four and a half meters. The long rhizome gives powerful shoots. The greyish-green leaves are pointed. Rigid dense plates have a rough edge. Large inflorescences of marsh reed are represented by a dense panicle with a drooping top. Inconspicuous flowers are collected in compressed spikelets of a dark purple hue. This species blooms from mid-July to the end of September, the fruit in the form of a caryopsis does not ripen until August. In swampy areas, marsh reed forms very dense and clean thickets.

Common reed. This tall, robust perennial delights with its strong, smooth stem and powerful rhizome. The color of the leaves often varies from grayish to green. Sharpened rigid sheet plates with a flat edge are pointed across the entire width. The length of the panicle can reach 50 cm, while its width is at least 15 cm. Small flowers without a perianth are grouped into interesting shortened spikelets of a linear shape. Flowering of this species can be observed from late June to early September. The fruit of the plant is represented by a small caryopsis, which ripens in mid-August.

Sugarcane. This species is very reminiscent of bamboo with its cylindrical stems. Their height is at least 6 meters. Sugar is obtained from the juice of the stems. For propagation, special cuttings are used, which develop in short shoots. This species prefers sunny places and fertile soils with abundant moisture. Under favorable conditions, sugarcane plantations look like wild, impenetrable jungles. The maximum sucrose content is guaranteed at the time the stems stop growing.

Wild reed. This bluish-green aquatic plant is a tall perennial with alternate lanceolate leaves and a smooth stem. Rigid sheet plates are not afraid of direct sunlight. Small multi-flowered spikelets are often collected in silvery fluffy panicles. Wild reed pleases with its flowering in July. It is quite common in the forest-steppe and forest zones, and is also found in various low-mountain regions and along river valleys. Due to the long rhizomes, this species forms surprisingly dense thickets. It should be mentioned that wild reed is a participant in the process of peat formation. In temperate climates, wild reed thrives best in wetlands and various other water bodies.
