yarrow

Common yarrow is a perennial, Compositae, low, fragrant plant. The rhizome of the plant is thick, yellow in color, with many roots and underground shoots. The plant has an erect stem, slightly branching in its upper part. On a low stem are the next leaves of a gray-green color, which are naked or pubescent. On the underside of the leaves there are oil glands. At the top of the stem is an inflorescence consisting of many small flower baskets. The fruit of the plant is an achene of an oblong shape, painted in a silvery-gray color. The plant blooms from early summer to early autumn. The fruits ripen in September-October.

Yarrow is found throughout Russia, Central Asia and the Far East. The plant prefers to grow on the edges, clearings in the forest, along roadsides. Yarrow grows in gardens, settlements, in parks in well-lit and weed-free places.

Useful properties of yarrow

Yarrow has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The plant has a positive effect on the internal organs of a person, and it also promotes the formation of mucus, relieves gases in the intestines. Yarrow acts on the smooth muscles of the intestines. The plant has an antispasmodic effect on the biliary and urinary tract. Due to the content of tannins, chamazulene and essential oil in the herb, it is used as a wound healing, bactericidal and anti-allergic agent.

Infusion of the plant is used to increase blood clotting, but it does not cause blood clots. Yarrow also helps with burns.

14 Research-Backed Medicinal Benefits of Yarrow

1 Helps fight infections

Helps fight infections

In order to study the composition and properties of yarrow, numerous experiments were carried out. Their results showed that the plant can resist all kinds of viruses, bacteria, parasitic infections.

For example, one of the most common diseases in pediatrics is inflammation of the tonsils, which is of viral origin. A specially organized study, which involved more than two hundred children, showed that yarrow helps to cope with tonsillitis. The children received 15-25 drops of the herbal extract, which contained only 0.4% yarrow, 3 to 6 times a day. The results showed that when combined with standard therapy, yarrow accelerated the healing process and also reduced the need for pain medication [1]

Yarrow extract has been shown to be effective in a laboratory study in animals with leishmaniasis. The study used a topical gel containing 5% yarrow. The affected areas of the skin were treated twice a day. A few days later, scientists noted a pronounced improvement in the skin condition in mice [2]

Experimentally, it was possible to establish the effectiveness of yarrow against a number of parasitic infections, such as:

  • Malaria.
  • Toxoplasmosis.
  • Chagas disease.
  • Echinococcosis [3], [4], [5],[6], [7], [8].

In laboratory conditions, it was found that the extract and essential oils of yarrow have an inhibitory effect on yeast fungi of the genus Candida.

A similar effect has been recorded for pathogenic bacteria:

  • E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria, Staphylococcus aureus - pathogens that cause food poisoning, skin infections [9], [10].
  • Streptococcus, bacteria of the genus Actinomyces, causing the destruction of tooth enamel, provoking the formation of cavities [11].
  • Pneumococcus, Klebsiella, which cause pneumonia [12], [13].
  • Helicobacter pylori bacteria causing gastritis, stomach ulcer [14], [15].

2 Restores the structure of the skin, eliminates its irritation

During the study of the effect of yarrow on the course of infectious dermatological diseases, the effect of skin regeneration was recorded. In cosmetology, yarrow undeservedly remains on the sidelines. It is rarely included in skin care products, although positive results from dermatological studies have already been published.

Clinical trials in which a total of 83 adult women participated showed that yarrow has a positive effect on the skin. The participants used a cream with 2% yarrow extract twice a day. The results were amazing - the skin was renewed, enlarged pores narrowed, mimic and age wrinkles decreased.

Another study showed that yarrow has a stimulating effect on keratinocytes (hair follicles), thereby improving hair growth [16].

One study involved 23 people with symptoms of skin irritation. Each of the subjects applied a mixture of yarrow extract, olive and sunflower oil to the affected areas twice a day for a week. It is noteworthy that for the preparation of the composition, oil from the yarrow extract was used, and not essential oil. Objectively, the study participants noted sufficient skin hydration, restoration of the pH level, reduction of redness foci [17]

Researchers have concluded that applying yarrow oil directly to the skin is much more effective than taking the extract by mouth for the treatment of irritation [18].

3 Accelerates the regeneration of wound surfaces

Valuable regenerating properties of yarrow are realized not only on the surface of the skin. It is known that the plant accelerates the recovery of damaged skin, mucous membranes, connective tissue.

In order to study the regenerative abilities of yarrow, a study was organized in which 100 women who underwent an episiotomy (a small surgical intervention to facilitate childbirth) took part. The participants treated the area of dissection with 5% yarrow ointment twice a day. After ten days, all women showed a decrease in soreness, swelling, bruising, local hyperemia [19]

Evidence has been obtained that yarrow accelerates the healing of the oral mucosa in patients with oral mucositis after chemotherapy. The study involved 56 people. For 14 days, the subjects rinsed their mouths with 50% yarrow extract. The procedure was performed four times a day, one portion of the rinse was 15 ml. All patients showed restoration of the mucous membrane of the tongue, cheeks, gums [20]

Topical application of yarrow extract in a cream has been shown to be effective in a rabbit study. It has been found that yarrow stimulates the production of collagen, the formation of new skin cells. A study in rats showed that the closest relatives of yarrow Centella asiatica and Achillea Kellalen have wound-healing properties [21], [22]

The results of laboratory experiments suggest that yarrow extract stimulates the synthesis of fibroblasts - the connective cells of the skin. Under the influence of active phytocompounds, fibroblasts grow, divide and transport to damaged areas, which accelerates the process of wound regeneration [23]

4 Prevents seizures

Yarrow contains a high content of flavonoids, powerful antioxidants that have a relaxing effect on the muscular wall of the abdominal organs and skeletal muscles, which means they prevent seizures.

A clinical trial in which 100 women with frequent menstrual cramps took part showed the effectiveness of yarrow in their relief. The experimental group of participants were offered tea from yarrow flowers. During two menstrual cycles, they drank three cups of tea on the first three days of menstruation. Compared with the placebo group, all participants showed an improvement in overall well-being, a decrease in painful contractions [24]

Intestinal peristalsis is nothing more than muscle contractions that are necessary to move the food bolus and mix with enzymes for proper digestion. Violation of the mechanism of intestinal contraction causes bloating, diarrhea, painful colic. Studies have shown that the use of yarrow extract normalizes the process of intestinal contractions, which improves overall he alth [25], [26]

Contractions in the airways provoke the development of bronchitis, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary embolism. In laboratory conditions, it was possible to obtain evidence that yarrow extract relaxes the respiratory muscles and alleviates the course of pulmonary diseases [27], [28],[29]

5 Supports normal digestion

In one of the studies on the properties of yarrow, 60 people diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome took part. For a month, three times a day, they took a mixture of yarrow, ginger and boswellia leaves. Objectively, all participants noted a decrease in pain and symptoms of bloating [30]

Reduced gastric motility leads to indigestion, which manifests itself in the form of constipation. Studies have shown that regular intake of yarrow extract stimulates gastric motility, facilitates the emptying mechanism. Simultaneously with these, the effect of activating the abdominal muscles was recorded.

Scientists believe that yarrow aids digestion due to its high choline content. The body needs choline to synthesize acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that regulates the parasympathetic nervous system. It is responsible for the cholinergic activity of the body - relaxes the walls of blood vessels, improves the ability of the intestine to absorb nutrients [31]

In experiments with animals, it was found that yarrow extract protects the gastric mucosa from the formation of ulcers provoked by irritants [32], [33].

For proper digestion of fats and absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, bile is needed, which is produced by the liver. The amount of bile may be insufficient in people with various diseases of the liver and gallbladder. Studies have shown that yarrow promotes increased bile secretion in laboratory animals [34], [35]

6 Yarrow prevents heart disease

Studies involving 100 people have shown that yarrow extract helps lower blood pressure, normalizes blood lipid profile. During the experiment, subjects received 15 to 20 drops twice a day. The results obtained confirmed the data of an earlier study with laboratory animals. In rats, yarrow extract has a diuretic, hypotensive effect due to the relaxation of the vascular wall [36], [37], [38] , [39]

Surprisingly, yarrow extract can stimulate the growth of new vessels and reduce the symptoms of inflammation. According to researchers, yarrow is an excellent prophylactic against atherosclerosis - clogged arteries [40].

7 Improves the condition of patients with multiple sclerosis

In one study, 75 patients with multiple sclerosis received 250 to 500 mg of yarrow extract daily for a year. The control analysis of the subjects showed a decrease in the rate of progression of the disease, a decrease in the number of relapses throughout the study. The images of the brain visualized a decrease in the lesions of myelin cells, an improvement in motor activity, cognitive processes [41]

The effect of yarrow on the course of multiple sclerosis was also studied in laboratory animals. Thus, data were obtained that yarrow flavonoids, namely apigenin and luteolin, alleviate the symptoms of the disease, slow down the progression of demyelination foci, and reduce the number of relapses [42], [43], [44]

8 Good for the nervous system

During a study on the effects of yarrow in 60 participants with irritable bowel syndrome, additional evidence emerged that the plant extract reduces feelings of anxiety [45].

A more extensive experiment with laboratory animals showed that yarrow extract has a positive effect on the nervous system of animals, reduces anxiety [46], [47].

9 Protects the liver

36 people diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver took part in clinical trials of a phytopreparation based on yarrow. For six months, participants took the drug 3 tablets three times a day. At the end of the experiment, a decrease in lesions of the liver tissue, restoration of liver functions was established. Long-term use of the drug did not cause any side effects and was considered absolutely safe [48]

Studying the effect of yarrow, both as an independent extract and as part of herbal complexes, on mice showed a protective effect on liver cells from toxic chemical compounds [49],[50], [51].

10 Reduces the risk of bleeding

Reduces the risk of bleeding

High levels of nitric oxide (NO) have been found in the blood of patients suffering from chronic kidney disease. It is considered a pro-inflammatory marker that increases the risk of bleeding by affecting platelet function. A study in 31 people with this symptom found that yarrow flower powder reduced levels of nitric oxide, as well as by-products from nitric oxide reactions. The effect was recorded when using 1.5 g of the drug three times a week for two months.

However, scientists note that yarrow can provoke profuse bleeding if the dosage is not observed or if taken for a longer course [52].

11 Anti-inflammatory

Yarrow contains powerful antioxidants related to polyphenolic compounds:

  • Luteolin (combats all forms of cancer).
  • Quercetin.
  • Aligenin.
  • Rutin.
  • Chlorogenic acid.
  • Caffeic acid.

Test-tube study confirms potent antioxidant activity of yarrow extract [55], [56].

Antioxidants improve overall well-being, have a preventive effect on chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress [57], [58].

It is known that nicotine enhances the manifestations of oxidative stress, inhibits a man's ability to conceive, as it exacerbates the effect of free radicals on the testicles. Experiment with laboratory animals showed that the antioxidants contained in yarrow extract protect males from nicotine damage to the testicles [59], [60]

13 Prevents the development of diabetes
